These are the examples Anthropic published to show how skills work. Some are practical on their own, like handling PDFs or clicking through a web page to check it works. Others are there to learn from.
If you want to write your own skill, start with skill-creator: it walks Claude through writing one, then testing and tuning it.
Before you install
- Anthropic's list has several plugins. The box below installs example-skills (design, testing, skill-creator and more). The Word, PDF, PowerPoint and Excel skills come in a separate plugin, document-skills.
- Licenses differ by skill. Most are Apache-2.0, which lets you use and change them freely. The four document skills are source-available: you can read and use them, but not copy them into your own projects.
- Anthropic says the skills are for demonstration and learning.
Install it
The commands below are for AI coding tools like Claude Code, which work with files on your computer. They won't do anything typed into a ChatGPT or Claude chat in your browser. Don't have a coding tool yet? Install Claude Code first.
Use the box for the tool you have, and copy its commands. Lines that start with / go in the tool's chat box. Other lines go in Terminal, the app where you type commands to your computer. A plugin is a bundle of skills made for one tool, and a marketplace is the list the tool installs it from.
On a paid Claude plan you don't need the commands: these skills are already in the Claude app. Anthropic's help page Using skills in Claude shows where to turn them on.
